Nora Demers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from Oregon State University, with additional degrees in Zoology (M.S.) and Life Sciences (B.S.). Her research focuses on endocrine disruption in environmental systems, particularly analyzing water contamination from emerging chemicals like EDCs (endocrine-disrupting compounds) in Florida's ecosystems. Her work involves studying mosquitofish reproductive abnormalities and groundwater contamination, alongside sea turtle nesting patterns and human development impacts.
Demers teaches undergraduate courses in Biology, interdisciplinary science, and the Scientific Process. She mentors students on diverse topics including microbiota, ADHD, and muscular dystrophy models. Awards include the Estero Bay Environmental Stewardship Award and the Aquila Award for supporting student scholarship. She leads restoration projects in San Carlos Park and Gopher Tortoise habitats, integrating service learning with community engagement.
Her publications span environmental toxicology, pedagogical strategies, and ecological restoration. She collaborates with organizations like the AAAS, NSTA, and Gopher Tortoise Council. Grants include funding from the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program and FGCU's Center for Environment and Society.
