Professor Charles Forsdick is the Drapers Professor of French and Director of Section in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. He joined Cambridge in 2023 after holding the James Barrow Chair of French at the University of Liverpool from 2001-2023. Previously, he was Lecturer in French at the University of Glasgow. Professor Forsdick is also Adjunct Professor in Translation Studies at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University and Honorary Professor at the University of Liverpool's Centre for the Study of International Slavery.
His research interests span multiple interconnected fields:
- Francophone postcolonial studies, particularly postcolonial literature
- French colonial history and Caribbean literature (especially Haiti)
- Travel writing, exoticism, and dark tourism
- Slavery studies and penal heritage
- Translation studies and world literature
- Graphic fiction and contemporary French novel
Professor Forsdick's scholarly work demonstrates a consistent engagement with questions of memory, representation, and cross-cultural encounter, particularly as they relate to colonial and postcolonial contexts. His publications span edited collections, monographs, and critical editions that have significantly shaped contemporary understanding of Francophone literature and culture. His recent work has increasingly focused on the connections between travel, memory, and difficult heritage, particularly around sites associated with slavery and penal history.
His significant honors and appointments include:
- Member of the Academy of Europe
- Lead Fellow for Languages at the British Academy
- AHRC Theme Leadership Fellow for 'Translating Cultures' (2012-2021)
- President of the Society for French Studies (2012-14)
- Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of International Slavery (2010-13)
- Chair of sub-panel D26 (Modern Languages and Linguistics) for REF2021
- Member of the conseil scientifique of the Fondation pour la Mémoire de l'Esclavage (since 2019)
Professor Forsdick has edited or co-edited three series for Liverpool University Press and a series for Anthem Press. He serves on numerous journal editorial boards including Contemporary French and Francophone Studies, Australian Journal of French Studies, and Journal of Romance Studies. His leadership extends to directing major research projects including the 'Antislavery Knowledge Network' and the 'Reggae Research Network', which demonstrate his commitment to collaborative, community-engaged scholarship.
