Charles Burnett

Charles Burnett is a Professor of the History of Islamic Influences in Europe at the Warburg Institute, University of London. He holds a BA from Cambridge University (1972) and a PhD in Modern and Medieval Languages from the same institution (1976). His career includes fellowships at St John’s College, Cambridge (1976–1979), the Warburg Institute (1979–1982), and the University of Sheffield (1982–1985). He was appointed Lecturer at the Warburg Institute in 1985 and promoted to Professor in 1999.

**Research Interests**: Burnett focuses on the transmission of Arab knowledge to medieval Europe, Jesuit cultural exchange in Japan, palaeography, and the history of numerals. His work bridges pre-modern science, philosophy, and religious texts across cultural boundaries.

**Publications**: He has authored over 100 books and articles, including Arabic into Latin in the Middle Ages (2009), Numerals and Arithmetic in the Middle Ages (2010), and Abū Ma‘shar’s On Historical Astrology (2000). Recent works include studies on medieval divination practices and the cultural impact of Jesuit missions in Asia.
