Dr. Charles A. Nelson is a prominent academic and researcher with appointments at multiple Harvard schools, including as Professor of Pediatrics and Neuroscience at Harvard Medical School, Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry, Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He holds the Richard David Scott Chair in Pediatric Developmental Medicine Research at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he serves as Director of Research in the Division of Developmental Medicine.
Dr. Nelson earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1981. His research focuses on developmental cognitive neuroscience, particularly social perception development, autism trajectories, and the impact of early adversity on brain and behavioral growth. He leads studies such as the Longitudinal Accelerated Boston Study (LABS) and the Healthy Baby Study, exploring executive function, emotional regulation, and neurodevelopmental disorders like Fragile X Syndrome, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), and PTEN Hamartoma Syndrome.
Notable scientific achievements include chairing the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Early Experience and Brain Development and contributing to NAS reports like From Neurons to Neighborhoods. He has received prestigious awards such as the Leon Eisenberg Award, honorary doctorates, and election to multiple national and international academies. His lab at Boston Children’s Hospital mentors numerous postdoctoral, clinical, and student researchers, with a strong emphasis on translational studies and early intervention strategies for developmental disorders.
