Dr. Charity Brown is an Associate Professor at the University of Leeds' School of Psychology, where she also serves as the Widening Participation Lead. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Leeds and a PhD from the University of Kent, supported by an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship. Her research focuses on the interplay between language and memory, particularly how verbalisation (e.g., describing faces) influences visual perception and recognition. This work has practical applications in forensic contexts, such as improving facial composite creation for criminal investigations. Current research explores optimizing witness memory recall and the role of emotional language and contextual cues in facial emotion recognition.
Her professional accolades include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society. Dr. Brown teaches cognitive psychology, supervises undergraduate research, and actively contributes to widening participation initiatives in higher education.
