Chaoran Chen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at York University, affiliated with the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Toronto (2017), an M.A. from the same institution (2011), and a B.Econ. from Fudan University (2010). Prior to York, he taught at the National University of Singapore.
His research focuses on macroeconomics and economic development, particularly exploring cross-country productivity differences through resource misallocation, structural transformation, technology adoption, and incomplete market models. He employs general equilibrium frameworks and microdata to analyze issues like inequality, land markets, and labor mobility.
Key research themes include the interplay between health systems and economic inequality, gender disparities in structural change, and the effects of land security on economic productivity. His work bridges theoretical models with empirical analysis to inform development policies.
Chen has published widely on topics ranging from financial systems and managerial inputs to agricultural productivity in Africa. His work demonstrates a commitment to understanding systemic barriers to economic growth and equity.
He is currently based at York University’s Department of Economics, with a focus on advancing knowledge in development macroeconomics through interdisciplinary collaboration.
