Chantal Smith is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Washington and Lee University’s Williams School, specializing in labor economics, economics of education, and environmental economics. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Howard University, alongside degrees from Florida A&M University, University of Phoenix, and American University.

Her research focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to economics, particularly examining labor development in the U.S. South through the lens of race, ethnicity, and class. She is designing a course on this topic and conducting a study on economics programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with support from W&L’s DeLaney Center.
Recent accolades include her appointment as a DeLaney Center Faculty Fellow and election to the National Economic Association’s Executive Board of Directors. Smith teaches ECON 100 (Introduction to Economics) and aims to involve students in her research to broaden their understanding of the economics field.
