Chang Liu

Chang Liu is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), with a joint appointment in the Samueli School of Engineering. His research focuses on directed evolution, protein engineering, synthetic biology, and genetic systems. He leads the Liu Lab, which develops innovative methods for in vivo hypermutation, orthogonal replication systems, and high-throughput screening to advance protein design and genetic engineering.

Key research interests include the evolution of enzymes and antibodies, molecular recording systems, and applications of synthetic biology in drug development and biotechnology. His work bridges fundamental science and applied engineering, addressing challenges in biomedicine and industrial biotechnology.

Notable contributions include the development of the OrthoRep system for continuous evolution and advancements in antibody engineering using yeast surface display. Liu’s research has been published in top-tier journals, with a focus on scalable evolutionary methods and synthetic genetic tools.
