Dr. Chandra S. Rai is a Professor at the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering at the University of Oklahoma, holding the Martin G. Miller Endowed Professorship. He served as the Director of the Petroleum Engineering Department from 2007 to 2019 and has over 40 years of experience in reservoir characterization, petrophysics, and unconventional resources.
Education
- B.S. Applied Geophysics, Indian School of Mines (1970)
- M.S. Applied Geophysics, Indian School of Mines (1971)
- Ph.D. Geology & Geophysics, University of Hawaii (1977)
Research Interests focus on unconventional reservoir rocks (shales), microstructural characterization, anisotropy, NMR, hydraulic fracturing, CO2 geostorage, and hydrogen storage. His work includes experimental studies on fluid-rock interactions, adsorption, and transport properties in tight reservoirs, funded by an industrial consortium with Prof. Carl Sondergeld.
Recent Publications highlight advancements in hydrogen geostorage, CO2 sequestration, and machine learning applications for rock property prediction. He has published over 200 papers and holds 14 U.S. patents.
Scientific Awards
- Distinguished Technical Achievement Award, Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts
- Distinguished Member, Society of Petroleum Engineers
