Dr. Sheng Peng is a Research Professor at the Bureau of Economic Geology within the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. His expertise lies in petrophysics, fluid flow dynamics in unconventional reservoirs, and carbon sequestration. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Hydrogeology from the University of Arizona and has held academic positions at institutions including Beijing Normal University and the University of Texas at Arlington. His research focuses on shale and tight rock reservoirs, including CO2 storage mechanisms, wettability dynamics, and fluid displacement processes.
- Affiliations: Bureau of Economic Geology, Jackson School of Geosciences
- Education:
- Ph.D., Environmental Hydrogeology, University of Arizona (2004)
- M.S., Environmental Sciences, Beijing Normal University (2000)
- B.E., Environmental Planning, Suzhou Institute of Urban Construction & Environmental Protection (1997)
His research interests span petrophysical characterization of unconventional reservoirs, CO2 storage potential, shale wettability, and multiphase flow mechanisms. He has pioneered integrated imaging techniques (e.g., micro-CT, SEM) and experimental methods to study fluid behavior in nanoporous media. Key contributions include understanding CO2 sweeping efficiency in shale, liquid slip flow dynamics, and the impact of pore heterogeneity on reservoir performance.
Dr. Peng has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and serves as an Associate Editor for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Reservoir Evaluation & Engineering. His work has been supported by grants from DOE, NASA, and industry partners. He advises students on topics like shale petrophysics and environmental remediation, and his lab focuses on advancing laboratory and analytical methods for reservoir characterization.
- Grants & Funding: Includes projects on carbon storage, shale permeability, and fluid dynamics funded by DOE, NASA, and industry collaborations.
- Labs/Teams: Leads the Unconventional Petrophysics Lab, specializing in advanced imaging and flow experiments for reservoir analysis.
