Chandra D.L. Waring

Chandra D.L. Waring is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, affiliated with the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Her work focuses on bi/multiracial Americans, examining racial capital, white privilege dynamics, and intersections of race/gender. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Connecticut (2013), with a dissertation on racial capital among Black/White biracial Americans.

Her research challenges narratives of racial harmony by exposing systemic inequities faced by multiracial populations. Current studies explore how multiracial individuals with white ancestry navigate white privilege while facing racial policing from monoracial groups. Recent work includes analyses of multiracial family dynamics and future projections of racial demographics.

Key awards include the 2011 ABS Graduate Student Paper Competition. Her work has been featured on academic podcasts and highlighted as ASA Monthly's 2023 Featured Article. Waring advises students on navigating racialized academic spaces and advocates for equitable faculty practices through her institutional roles.
