Dr. Chana Etengoff is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Adelphi University’s Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology. She leads the Intersectional Development (ID) Lab and is an active scholar in LGBTQ+ and religious identity research, with a focus on intersectional developmental psychology.

Her research explores how cultural, gender, and sexual minority groups navigate identity conflicts and build resilience, particularly focusing on LGBTQ+ Muslims and transgender individuals. Guided by transformative and co-constructive developmental theories, her work examines identity integration, online communities (e.g., transvlogs), and sociorelational dynamics. She emphasizes community-engaged scholarship and applies her research through public-facing articles and trainings.
The trends in her recent publications reflect a strong focus on identity integration, resilience, and the intersection of religion and sexuality. Her work spans clinical, developmental, and social psychology, with increasing emphasis on scale development, pedagogy, and public application. She frequently publishes in journals such as Journal of Homosexuality, Psychology of Religion and Spirituality, and Teaching of Psychology.

Dr. Etengoff also contributes to professional service as a grant reviewer for the Israel Science Foundation and as a teaching assessment consultant for the College Board. She leads community outreach through trainings on DEIB, LGBTQ+ inclusivity, and clinical ethics.
Dr. Etengoff directs the Intersectional Development (ID) Lab, which focuses on the LGBTQ+ Muslim Experience Study and the Transvlog Project. The lab recruits participants globally and involves research assistants in translation, data analysis, and conference presentations.
