Chad Schwartz is a Professor in the Department of Architecture at Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning and Design, where he has taught since 2017. Previously, he served as a professor at Southern Illinois University and as a faculty associate at Arizona State University. His educational background includes a Master of Architecture from Arizona State University (2003) and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Illinois-Chicago (2000). He is an NCARB-certified architect licensed in Arizona.
Professor Schwartz's research centers on architectural tectonics, examining the intersection of design theory and construction practice. His work explores how material choices, construction techniques, and spatial assemblies influence architectural experience and meaning. Current research focuses on place-based tectonics in the Sonoran Desert region, analyzing how environmental, cultural, and material factors shape regional architecture.
His scholarship demonstrates a consistent focus on translating tectonic theory into practical educational frameworks. Publications analyze contemporary and historical architecture through the lens of construction logic while developing accessible pedagogical approaches for students. Research themes include regional adaptation, material expression, and culturally informed construction practices.
Honors include:
- Regnier Faculty Research Chair (2020-2023)
Professor Schwartz integrates research into teaching through design studios, building technology courses, and community-engaged design/build projects. His pedagogical approach emphasizes the connection between theoretical concepts and hands-on construction experiences.
