Dr. Chad Mirkin is the George B. Rathmann Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University and Director of the International Institute for Nanotechnology (IIN). He holds cross-appointments in Materials Science & Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Biological Engineering, and Medicine. His research focuses on nanotechnology, nanoparticle synthesis, and the development of Spherical Nucleic Acids (SNAs) and Dip-Pen Nanolithography (DPN). Mirkin has authored over 870 manuscripts and 1,200 patents, founding companies like Nanosphere and Azul 3D. He has been awarded over 250 honors, including the Kavli Prize in Nanoscience (2024) and the Perkin Medal (2019).
Educated at Dickinson College (B.S., 1986) and Penn State University (Ph.D., 1989), Mirkin joined Northwestern in 1991. His work bridges chemistry, engineering, and medicine, advancing fields like nanomedicine, catalysis, and materials discovery. He leads a lab with over 320 trained students/postdocs, many of whom now hold academic positions globally. Mirkin also serves on editorial boards of journals like Small and PNAS, and previously advised the Obama administration via PCAST.
Research highlights include SNAs for vaccines and diagnostics, colloidal crystal engineering with DNA, and innovations in 3D printing (e.g., HARP). His labs investigate nanoparticle-based therapies, energy materials, and AI-driven materials discovery. Mirkin’s impact spans academia, industry, and policy, making him a pivotal figure in nanoscience.
