Chad Bryant

Chad Bryant is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina's College of Arts and Sciences. His research explores nationalism and urban experiences in modern Central and Eastern Europe, with a particular focus on the Czech Republic and Prague's role in shaping national identity.

Education includes an MA (1997) and PhD (2002) from the University of California, Berkeley. Research examines how cities function as sites of belonging during political upheavals, with recent work investigating Prague under Nazi occupation and Stalinist rule.

Publications demonstrate consistent focus on Czechoslovak history, cultural resistance, and urban narratives. Recent works highlight how artistic expressions and everyday spaces facilitate resistance under authoritarian regimes.

Currently advises 9 graduate students on topics spanning Czech nationalism, Stalinist show trials, and urban dissent. Teaches courses on European history, misinformation, and newspaper historiography.
