Celia Faiola is an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), with joint appointments in the School of Biological Sciences (Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) and the Department of Chemistry. Her research focuses on the sources, transformations, and fate of chemical signals in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, emphasizing the role of plant emissions in atmospheric aerosol formation and climate feedbacks. She holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Science from Washington State University (2014) and B.S. degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Central Washington University (2009).
Her research spans three core themes: (1) Plant Stress Emissions and Atmospheric Aerosol Formation, investigating how plant stress responses influence SOA production and climate properties; (2) Identifying Missing Sources of Plant Volatile Emissions, using real plant emissions to uncover overlooked compounds contributing to aerosol formation; and (3) Urban Ecology and Greening, evaluating how urban tree choices impact air quality through SOA formation and toxicity. Recent work highlights the critical role of sesquiterpenes in SOA dynamics and the dual effects of anthropogenic emissions on biogenic aerosol formation.
Dr. Faiola’s lab actively recruits graduate students and advises a diverse team of researchers. Her work has been published in high-impact journals like Earth & Space Chemistry, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, and Environmental Science & Technology, with a focus on advancing interdisciplinary understanding of land-atmosphere interactions and climate impacts.
Advising and grants: Current advisees include Shan Gu (Eco/Evo), Jasmine Osei-Enin (Eco/Evo), and others. Her research leverages collaborative grants to explore plant-microbe interactions, urban greening strategies, and aerosol phase behavior. The Faiola Lab is part of UCI’s broader efforts in chemical ecology and environmental science.
