Celeste Arrington is the Korea Foundation Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University (GW). She serves as Director of the GW Institute for Korean Studies and Co-Director of the East Asia National Resource Center. Her research focuses on comparative politics in Northeast Asia, with emphasis on law, governance, civil society, and transnational activism. She holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and has held prestigious fellowships at institutions including Harvard University, Princeton University, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Arrington’s work examines legal mobilization in Japan and South Korea, particularly in areas like disability rights, tobacco control, and historical grievances. Her book *Accidental Activists* (2016) analyzes victim movements’ impact on government accountability. Current projects explore the legalistic turn in Korean and Japanese governance. She teaches courses on Korean politics, East Asian states-societies dynamics, and social movements.
Awarded the 2021 Early Career Research Scholar Award from GW, her research has appeared in journals like *Comparative Political Studies* and *Law & Society Review*. Her work bridges academic rigor with policy relevance, addressing themes such as media’s role in activism, North Korean human rights advocacy, and institutional responses to social movements.
