Professor Sir Cato T. Laurencin, M.D., Ph.D., is the University Professor and Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut. He is Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Laurencin serves as the Chief Executive Officer of The Cato T. Laurencin Institute for Regenerative Engineering.
Dr. Laurencin earned a B.S.E. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, his M.D. Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Medical School, and his Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology from MIT. A practicing sports medicine and shoulder surgeon, he has been named to America's Top Doctors for over fifteen years. He is a Fellow of multiple professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Laurencin is a pioneer of the new field of Regenerative Engineering. His research spans multiple disciplines including orthopaedic surgery, biomaterials, polymer science, chemistry, and stem cell science. He is an expert in biomaterials science, stem cell technology, and nanotechnology, and was named one of the 100 Engineers of the Modern Era by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Dr. Laurencin has received numerous prestigious awards including the National Medal of Technology and Innovation (awarded by President Obama), membership in all four National Academies (Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, and Inventors), and the Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia. He has also received the highest awards from multiple professional societies including the Founder's Award from the Society for Biomaterials and the Von Hippel Award from the Materials Research Society.
Dr. Laurencin is highly active in mentoring, particularly for underrepresented minority students, for which he received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Math, and Engineering Mentoring. He is also active in addressing Health Disparities and is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities.
Internationally recognized, Dr. Laurencin is a fellow of multiple international academies including the Indian National Academy of Sciences, the African Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. In March 2025, he was bestowed with Knighthood by the Governor General of St. Lucia for his exceptional service to Saint Lucia.
