Antonios Mikos is the Louis Calder Professor of Bioengineering and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice University. He leads three major research facilities: the Biomaterials Lab, the Center for Excellence in Tissue Engineering, and the J.W. Cox Laboratory for Biomedical Engineering. Holding dual appointments in Bioengineering and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, he oversees interdisciplinary research at the intersection of biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and nanotechnology.
Dr. Mikos earned his Dipl.Eng. from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1983) and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University (1988). His postdoctoral training at MIT and Harvard Medical School preceded his faculty role at Rice starting in 1992. With over 710 publications and 32 patents, his work spans biomaterials synthesis, drug delivery systems, and tissue engineering strategies for orthopaedic, dental, and cardiovascular applications.
His research focuses on 3D printing/bioprinting of biomaterial scaffolds, extracellular matrix-derived bioinks, and injectable hydrogels for tissue regeneration. Recent advancements include biomimetic strategies for cartilage repair and mechanically tunable scaffolds for osteosarcoma modeling.
Awarded over 100,000 citations with an h-index of 169, Mikos has received prestigious honors such as the Jensen Tissue Engineering Award and membership in the National Academies of Engineering and Medicine. He has mentored 71 Ph.D. students and 42 postdoctoral researchers, many continuing in academia globally.
As a leader in the field, he organizes the annual Advances in Tissue Engineering course and serves as editor-in-chief of the Tissue Engineering journal series. His editorial roles and professional service span multiple societies, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Biomedical Engineering Society.
Current lab initiatives address craniofacial reconstruction, skeletal muscle repair, and tumor microenvironment modeling. Collaborative efforts leverage bioreactors, in vitro disease models, and advanced biomaterials to bridge bench-to-bedside innovations in regenerative medicine.
