Associate Professor Cathy Greenfield is a scholar in Communication and Media Studies at RMIT University's School of Media & Communication. Her work integrates political studies, political economy, and cultural economy, with a focus on how communication technologies and media shape governance and societal structures. She is a former editor of Communication, Politics & Culture and has authored influential monographs such as Media & the Government of Populations (2018) and How We Are Governed (2014). Her research explores media populism, financialization, political economic literacy, and sustainability communication.
Greenfield teaches in the interdisciplinary Politics, Economies & Communication major, emphasizing the role of communication in political and economic conduct. She actively supervises 8 research postgraduates, focusing on topics like fact-checking in digital governance (Fact Check Project), cross-cultural Indigenous storytelling (ARC Linkage project 'Talking Country'), and publics' formation in contemporary contexts (Communicating Publics initiative).
Her recent projects include investigations into automated decision-making in Australian warehouses, decolonizing practices through digital storytelling with First Nations communities, and the evolving role of governance in Anglophone films. Greenfield's work bridges theoretical frameworks with applied research, addressing global challenges like sustainability and media's role in shaping power dynamics.
Her supervision portfolio spans over two decades, with topics ranging from socialist counterpublics in digital age activism to the cultural politics of typography in postfeminism. She collaborates widely, evidenced by her contributions to interdisciplinary journals and her role as a Chief Investigator in major research initiatives.
