Catherine Sackley serves as Professor of Rehabilitation at King's College London, where she was Head of the Department of Population Health Sciences (2014-2022), overseeing Physiotherapy, Primary Care, Public Health, and Global Health divisions with 220+ academic staff and 2,000 medical students. She concurrently holds the position of Head of Physiotherapy and develops clinical research partnerships with King’s Health Partners and King’s Sierra Leone Partnership.
Her educational foundation includes:
- 1982: Associateship in Physiotherapy, Sheffield City Polytechnic
- 1986: MSc Rehabilitation Studies, University of Southampton
- 1991: PhD, University of Nottingham
Sackley's research centers on stroke and Parkinson's disease rehabilitation through rigorous methodology, specializing in randomized controlled trials of complex interventions, cohort studies, and systematic reviews. She pioneers patient and public involvement frameworks to ensure clinical relevance, with particular emphasis on care home settings for elderly stroke survivors and culturally adapted interventions in low-resource contexts like Sierra Leone.
Her publication portfolio reveals sustained leadership in high-impact rehabilitation science, with recent work focusing on pharmacological adjuncts for stroke recovery (e.g., co-careldopa trials), Parkinson's disease management, and care home interventions. Articles consistently appear in top-tier journals including The Lancet (JIF 26.3) and JAMA Neurology (98th percentile), demonstrating methodological innovation in cluster-randomized designs and global health applications.
Key recognitions include:
- Princess Margaret Lecture, UK Stroke Forum (2018)
- Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (2018)
- NIHR Inaugural Senior Investigator (2008)
- Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Occupational Therapy (2008)
- Inaugural Distinguished Scholar, Society for Research in Rehabilitation (2013)
As principal investigator, she directs £15M+ in active research funding including NIHR Global Health grants for stroke care in Sierra Leone (£1.98M) and Parkinson's voice treatment trials (£1.94M), with additional projects addressing rheumatoid arthritis mobility and dementia care. Her grant portfolio spans clinical trials, health systems strengthening, and implementation science across UK and Sub-Saharan African contexts.
Sackley actively cultivates translational research capacity through King’s Sierra Leone Partnership and integrates global health perspectives into rehabilitation training programs at King's College London.
