Catherine Ragland is an Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology and Ethnomusicology Area Coordinator at the University of North Texas College of Music. She holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the City University of New York Graduate Center, an M.A. from the University of Washington-Seattle, and a B.A. from the University of Texas-Austin. Dr. Ragland previously served as Assistant Professor at UT-Pan American and has held positions at Empire State College (SUNY), Temple University, Lehman College, and Hunter College.
Her research explores US-Mexico border music, rurality, identity politics, memory, place, and music's relationship with immigration/migration and gender. She has conducted fieldwork in Texas, the American Southwest, Northern/Central Mexico, and Northern Spain. As a public ethnomusicologist, she has curated the International Accordion Festival in San Antonio and directed programs for the Center for Traditional Music and Dance, Texas Folklife Resources, and Northwest Folklife.
She authored Música Norteña: Mexican Migrants Creating a Nation between Nations and has published in the Grove Dictionary of Music Online, Ethnomusicology, Journal of American Folklore, and multiple edited volumes on transnational music and culture.
