Dr. Catherine Parayre is a Professor and Director (on leave) of the Centre for Studies in Arts and Culture at Brock University. She holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages from the University of Georgia, complemented by advanced degrees in Women’s Studies, French Literature, and English Studies from multiple institutions. Her research bridges contemporary Occitan literature, disability studies, and interdisciplinary art practices. Dr. Parayre is cross-appointed to the Modern Languages department and actively engages in artist book projects and cultural curation.
Her academic work focuses on questions of identity in minority literatures, the role of photography in trauma narration, and disability representation. She has published extensively on Occitan writers like Jean Boudou and edited volumes exploring disfigurement in art and literature. Recent projects include collaborative artist books addressing themes of mobility and post-industrial spaces.
Dr. Parayre teaches courses on contemporary arts, critical publishing, and comparative literature. She has curated exhibitions at Rodman Hall Art Centre and contributed to initiatives like the A River Rises project. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary dialogue between literary studies and visual arts.
Her advising and grants include leadership in the Centre’s programming and cross-departmental collaborations. She is affiliated with the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts and contributes to transnational art partnerships between Brock and institutions in Austria and France.
