Catherine Mary Thomson

Catherine Mary Thomson is a Research Fellow at the Social Policy Research Centre within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of New South Wales. She is also currently enrolled as a PhD candidate supported by a research scholarship from the Australian Institute for Population Ageing at UNSW.

Ms Thomson holds a BA from Sydney University and an MA from UNSW.

Her research focuses on carers and the costs of care in an ageing society, with particular expertise in informal care systems. She has extensive experience researching access to health and community care services, the impact of informal care on employment, health and financial security, informal care and time use, aged care issues, and young carers. Her current research specifically examines carers and social inclusion and young carers.

Ms Thomson's expertise in the field of informal care has been recognized through multiple Australian Research Council grants where she served as a co-Chief Investigator for projects including Time for Care (2000), Identifying Isolated Carers (2002), Negotiating Caring and Employment (2004), and Young Carers (2006).

She is actively involved in academic service as a co-editor of the SPRC newsletter and serves on the UNSW Human Ethics Research Advisory Panel. Ms Thomson has published extensively across multiple formats including books, book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, presentations, reports, and preprints.

Her work is situated within the Social Policy Research Centre, which conducts comprehensive research on social policy issues and disseminates findings to influence policy development and practice.
