Catherine Laws is a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of York and a Senior Research Fellow at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent. Her work bridges performance and scholarship, focusing on contemporary music practices and the interplay of music with language and embodiment. She collaborates extensively with composers and researchers to explore tactile interaction, subjectivity, and interdisciplinary performance. Key projects include investigations into musical touch, embodiment in historically informed performance, and the role of physicality in computer music.
Her research spans projects like 'Performance and Embodiment,' examining embodied knowledge in music-making, and 'Tracking Physicality,' which explores electronic and traditional instrument interactions. She also leads studies on subjectivity in performance, blending artistic experimentation with theoretical frameworks. Catherine performs with ensembles such as Black Hair and [rout], emphasizing experimental and contemporary repertoires.
Collaborations with institutions like the University of Greenwich and Leeds Beckett University underscore her interdisciplinary approach. Her upcoming book on Samuel Beckett and music further highlights her exploration of music-language intersections. Grants and partnerships, such as those with the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, support her work. Catherine’s research is disseminated through academic papers, performances, and educational initiatives.
