Catherine Kendig is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Michigan State University (MSU), affiliated with the College of Arts & Letters. Her research focuses on the metaphysical and normative foundations of scientific classifications, particularly in synthetic biology, ethnobiology, and agricultural science. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Exeter and an MSc from King’s College London.
Her work examines concepts like 'proof-of-concept' in synthetic biology, indigenous botanical naming practices, and epistemic standards in engineering and agriculture. Kendig has served as Associate Editor of History & Philosophy of the Life Sciences and co-edits the History of Philosophy and Science series. She is actively involved in organizations such as the International Society for Philosophy of Science in Practice and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the USDA. Notable contributions include her 2016 edited volume Natural Kinds and Classification in Scientific Practice and her 2011 article on race, which earned an APA Honorable Mention. She teaches courses like Philosophy of Science and Nature of Science, emphasizing interdisciplinary and socially relevant scholarship.
