Professor Catherine Jones holds a Personal Chair at the University of Aberdeen’s School of Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture. Her academic journey includes a PhD and undergraduate studies in English at the University of Cambridge. She has held roles such as Director of Research (2019–2022) and Programme Coordinator for the Intercalated BSc in Medical Humanities. Her research bridges literature, music, and history, with a focus on the Atlantic world, Romanticism, and medical humanities.
Dr. Jones’ research interests include Anglophone literature, comparative studies, and interdisciplinary approaches to historical and cultural analysis. She has published extensively, including Literature and Music in the Atlantic World, 1767–1867, awarded the 2015 British Association for American Studies Book Prize. Her work explores themes like colonialism, empire, and the intersections of art forms.
Her recent articles highlight topics such as Scottish institutional history, Romantic-era transatlantic exchanges, and the role of music in literary narratives. She has secured grants from the Leverhulme Trust, Wellcome Trust, and others, supporting research on medical humanities and transnational cultural networks. Dr. Jones supervises PhDs in English, History, and Music, with a focus on 18th- and 19th-century topics.
Professional affiliations include membership in UKRI’s Future Leaders Fellowships Peer Review College and roles in the Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society. She contributes to teaching modules on literature, medicine, and Romanticism, blending academic rigor with creative approaches to humanities education.
