Catherine Hill

Professor Catherine Hill is a clinical rheumatologist, epidemiologist and expert in evidence-based healthcare at the Adelaide Medical School, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Adelaide. She leads the Rheumatology Research Group at the Basil Hetzel Institute and serves as Chief Investigator of the North West Adelaide Health Study (NWAHS).

Her educational background includes clinical rheumatology and general medicine training at TQEH/RAH, a Masters of Science in Biostats & Epidemiology from Boston University, and an MD from the University of Adelaide.

Professor Hill's research expertise spans population epidemiology, randomized clinical trials, qualitative research, biobanking, and quality improvement. Her work has significantly contributed to understanding musculoskeletal diseases as one of the three most important diseases in terms of global disease burden, as published in the Lancet (2012). She is particularly known for her research in osteoarthritis and vasculitis, including establishing the South Australian Giant Cell Arteritis Registry in 2009.

She has received the 2022 Parr Prize for Rheumatology Research Excellence, awarded every three years for outstanding contribution to rheumatology research.

Professor Hill has held numerous leadership positions including past President of the Australian Rheumatology Association (2020-22), Chair of the Education Committee of Asia Pacific League Against Rheumatism (APLAR), and Chair of South Australian Medicines Evaluation Panel (SAMEP; 2011-2023). She is also involved with OMERACT (Outcome Measures in Rheumatology) since 2014, co-chairing 4 working groups and serving on the Technical Advisory Group.

She serves on multiple boards including the Australian and New Zealand Vasculitis Society (as a founding Board Member), The Hospital Research Foundation (THRF), and the THRG-Arthritis Board of Governors.
