Catherine Higham serves as a Studio Tutor in the Landscape department within the School of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Sheffield. She has been an integral part of the academic staff since 2010, balancing her teaching responsibilities with a self-employed career in landscape architecture consultancy and fine art. Her dual practice enriches the educational experience by bridging theoretical concepts with real-world design challenges and artistic expression.
Higham's artistic and professional work centers on the dynamic relationship between natural and constructed landscapes. Key themes include landform, surface, space, water, vegetation, light, weather, and built structures, with a particular interest in habitats for both humans and wildlife. She investigates the interplay of form and non-form, figure and ground, precision and spontaneity, and absence and presence. Her methodology often merges traditional hand-drawn techniques with digital media to create compelling visualizations and illustrations for concept development and site analysis.
Higham is deeply engaged in student development through studio-based teaching. Her current teaching responsibilities include:
- LSC61001 Studio Project 1: Landscape Architecture: Nature, People, Place
- LSC61002 Studio Project 2
- LSC332 Integrated Project
- LSC116 Space Making
- LSC6005 Special Project
As a member of the Landscape department's academic team, Higham collaborates with colleagues to deliver the curriculum and foster a creative studio environment. Her professional memberships in the Landscape Institute and Sheffield Creative Guild extend her network beyond the university, facilitating interdisciplinary projects and community engagement.
