Her research focuses on development economics, particularly the economics of households and extended families in Africa, and the historical impacts of colonization on populations. She holds a prestigious Starting Grant from the European Research Council (2017) for her project on gender dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa. Her work spans empirical studies in Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso, Peru, and historical analyses of Belgian and Russian colonial policies.
Key research interests include intra-household resource allocation, gender agency, historical institutional legacies, and the effects of colonization on social structures. She has explored topics such as index insurance spillover effects in African agriculture, the persistence of economic systems under adverse policies, and migration patterns of Turkish-origin communities in Belgium. Ongoing projects include the African Women initiative examining gender discrimination and well-being, and Muslim Women in Migration studying transnational family dynamics.
Her work combines theoretical models with field experiments, leveraging first-hand data collection. Notable contributions include studies on household efficiency in the Philippines, economic resilience in Kyrgyzstan, and gender biases in Kazakhstan under Russian colonization. She teaches microeconomics and development economics, emphasizing practical applications of economic theory.
