Catherine Donaldson is a Lecturer in Filmmaking at the University of Sussex, based in the School of Media, Arts and Humanities. She holds a BA (Hons) in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Cambridge (2004) and a PhD from the University of Sussex (2023). Her academic work combines practice-based research with critical inquiry, focusing on migration, borders, and media representation. Prior to academia, she founded Eggplant12 Films Ltd in 2007, producing award-winning documentaries including Beauty and Brains (2010) supported by the World Bank. She has also served as a Lecturer at the University of Brighton (2015–2018).
Research Interests: Asylum policies, ethnofiction, migration narratives, nationalism, and the liminal experiences of displaced persons. Her creative works explore these themes through film, theatre, and participatory media projects.
Teaching & Supervision: Teaches Screen Drama theory and practice across BA and MA programs at Sussex, convening the Filmmaking BA. Supervises students in Media for Social Change and Filmmaking MAs. Developed courses like Realisation and Visualisation (2021), Creative Media: Screen Drama (2018), and Creative Film Production: Screen Drama (2018).
Recent Work: Her 2024 doctoral thesis examines asylum seekers’ liminal states, while Between (2022) stages migrant narratives through experimental theatre formats. Current projects include feature film adaptations of her research and continued collaboration with social justice organizations.
