Catherine Brekus is the Charles Warren Professor of the History of Religion in America at Harvard Divinity School and Chair of the Committee on the Study of Religion in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She holds affiliate roles in the Program in American Studies and the Department of History. Her work bridges religious history, gender studies, and American cultural history.
Brekus earned a BA in History and Literature from Harvard University and a PhD in American Studies from Yale University. Her research explores the intersection of religion with American culture, focusing on women’s roles, gender dynamics, and the evangelical movement. Current projects include co-authoring a biography of Sarah Edwards and a book on American nationalism’s ties to Christianity.
Her scholarship has produced seminal works such as Strangers and Pilgrims: Female Preaching in America and Sarah Osborn’s World, which received major academic awards. Her recent publications engage with contemporary issues like Christian nationalism and religion’s role in political discourse.
