Catharine I. Paules, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases at Penn State College of Medicine. She joined the faculty in July 2018 and serves as a clinician-investigator focused on emerging respiratory viruses, particularly COVID-19, and infections in bone marrow transplant recipients.
Her research includes leadership roles as site PI for major studies like the NIH-sponsored STRIVE trial, ACTIV-5/BET-B trial, and Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trial. She also leads initiatives like the NIH Recover initiative for Long COVID and the Project ECHO program for nursing homes.
Dr. Paules is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. Her clinical work includes directing an infectious diseases consult service for bone marrow transplant patients and serving on Penn State Health's Special Pathogens Team. She actively mentors trainees and has been recognized with the 2021 Department of Medicine Exceptional Performance Award.
Her academic contributions span 46 publications, with recent work focusing on lymphocyte dynamics in severe COVID-19, immunomodulatory therapies for hospitalized patients, and hematologic outcomes in immunocompromised populations.
