Dr. Kathleen Julian is a Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, at the Penn State College of Medicine. She serves as an Associate Hospital Epidemiologist at Penn State Health and has been on the faculty since 2005. Her clinical expertise includes managing infections in solid organ transplant and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients. She completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center (2002–2005), followed by an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer role at the CDC (2000–2002) and residency in internal medicine at Brown University School of Medicine (1997–2000).
Research interests focus on reducing healthcare-associated infections, combating multi-drug resistant bacteria (e.g., MRSA), outbreak investigations, and improving infection control practices. She also studies infections in transplant populations, including UTIs in renal transplant recipients. Her educational work includes developing online tutorials on antimicrobial stewardship and mentoring trainees in clinical epidemiology.
