Catharina Laporte is an Instructional Professor and Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence in the Department of Anthropology at Texas A&M University, within the College of Liberal Arts. Her research focuses on applied anthropology, cultural evolution, and the integration of anthropological theory into real-world problem-solving. She holds a PhD from Texas A&M University (2013) and is deeply committed to innovative, inclusive education.
Dr. Laporte’s teaching philosophy emphasizes active learning, diversity in pedagogy, and real-world skill development. She has redesigned core courses like ANTH205 to incorporate student choice and ethnographic engagement. Her courses include ANTH205, ANTH222, and ANTH403, among others.
Her research explores how cultural diversity and applied anthropological frameworks can address societal challenges. Notable projects include collaborative ethics development and investigations into HTS controversies. She has received the Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence award, reflecting her dedication to pedagogical innovation.
Dr. Laporte’s student showcase highlights impactful projects such as Marysa Torres’ children’s article on Tarsier vocalizations, Arik Bord’s ethnographic interviews film, and Claire Casey’s theoretical toolkit on folklore. She actively fosters interdisciplinary collaboration through role-playing exercises and community engagement.
