Dr Cate Massola is a socio-cultural anthropologist specializing in visual anthropology and Indigenous art research at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies. She holds a PhD from ANU, MA and GradCert from the University of Melbourne, and a BFA from the Victorian College of the Arts.
Her research focuses on cross-cultural relations, decolonial discourse, and Indigenous cultural heritage, particularly among the Gija community of Warmun, Western Australia. She explores agency, art, and material culture through ethnography and visual analysis, including a forthcoming book on the Warmun Community Collection.
Teaching includes courses like ANTH1001 (Introduction to Anthropology) and SCWK6902 (Social Research). Awards include the 2024 Dean’s Citation and recognition from the American Anthropological Association. Her work bridges anthropology, museum studies, and social justice, emphasizing ethical collaboration and Indigenous-led processes.
