Cassie F. Quigley

Cassie F. Quigley serves as Associate Department Chair and Associate Professor of Science Education in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leading at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education. She earned her doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction at Indiana University in 2010 and previously held an associate professor position at Clemson University before joining Pitt.

Dr. Quigley's research program centers on transforming science education through four interconnected strands:

• Liberatory STEAM Education examining how equitable teaching practices impact students' scientific identity formation
• Community-Engaged Science using decolonizing methodologies to center participants as co-researchers
• Participatory Research Methods employing narrative inquiries and photo-methodologies
• Transformational Computer Science connecting environmental justice with computational thinking

Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on collaborative problem-solving in makerspaces, STEAM curriculum implementation, and supporting STEM occupational identity for girls and students of color. The research consistently emphasizes justice-focused approaches that disrupt traditional power structures in science education.

Dr. Quigley has received significant recognition including:

• Mascaro Center's Faculty Award in Sustainability (2022)
• PA STEM Ambassador to the Department of Education (2019)
• Pitt Sustainability Award (2022, shared with Danielle Andrews-Brown)

She currently leads multiple major research initiatives including the NSF-funded Strength Across Schools Partnership and the Environmental Justice Pathway project, working with seven school districts across Western PA. Dr. Quigley advises PhD students Holly Plank and Hillary Henry while collaborating with undergraduate researchers on environmental justice initiatives. Her departmental leadership includes directing the STEAM Certificate Program and teaching across multiple teacher certification pathways.
