Casey Minna Schwarz is an Associate Professor of Physics and Department Chair in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ursinus College, where she has been a faculty member since 2016. Her research lies at the intersection of materials science and optical engineering, with a focus on developing novel infrared optical materials and devices.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Physics, University of Central Florida
- B.A. in Physics, University of Central Florida
Her research interests include 3D direct laser writing of chalcogenide materials, nonlinear optical materials, laser fabrication, and physics education outreach. She actively develops optics for infrared applications in medicine, environmental sensing, and space exploration. Her work combines experimental synthesis, optical characterization, and nanofabrication techniques.
The recent publications highlight a strong trend in engineering chalcogenide-based glass-ceramics and microstructures using advanced laser techniques. Her research emphasizes functional optical device development, refractive index control, and nanocrystal integration for infrared photonics. Collaborations with institutions like UCF and researchers such as S. Kuebler and K. Richardson are central to her work.
Scientific Awards and Recognition:
- Mentored Jasper Stackawitz, recipient of the 2025 Teddi Laurin Scholarship from SPIE
Dr. Schwarz is deeply involved in mentoring undergraduate and high school students, frequently involving them in published research. She leads funded projects, including a $1.2 million grant from AmeriCOM for infrared glass recycling research. Her educational initiatives include physics outreach for K–12 students and programs promoting women in science. She teaches core physics courses such as General Physics, Modern Physics, and Materials Science, and leads the senior seminar.
She previously served as an Adjunct Professor at Valencia College and conducted postdoctoral research in the Kuebler group, focusing on novel optical materials. Her lab provides hands-on research opportunities in laser exposure, nano-device creation, and simulations, often in collaboration with UCF through Summer Fellows and REU programs.
