Dr. Casey Canfield is an Associate Professor in the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering (EMSE) department at Missouri University of Science and Technology, where she also serves as an Associate Investigator at the Intelligent Systems Center and Research Investigator at CREE. Her interdisciplinary work bridges engineering, policy, and human behavior, focusing on risk communication, human systems integration, and decision support in complex systems.
Dr. Canfield earned her Ph.D. in Engineering & Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University in 2016, following a B.S. in Engineering: Systems from Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in 2010. Prior to joining Missouri S&T in August 2018, she served as a Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Technologies Office from 2016-2018, where she designed programs to increase innovation in the energy sector.
Her research examines how humans interact with complex systems, particularly in energy, healthcare, and cybersecurity domains. Current projects include developing AI decision support tools for kidney transplant systems, analyzing rural broadband adoption dynamics, and studying consumer preferences for renewable energy procurement. Her approach combines behavioral experiments, agent-based modeling, and systems engineering principles to create practical interventions that improve decision-making in complex environments.
Dr. Canfield's recent publications (2023-2025) reveal a strong focus on human-AI collaboration, with particular emphasis on healthcare applications, rural infrastructure challenges, and energy decision-making. Her work consistently addresses the human element in technological systems, examining how to design interfaces and decision support tools that align with human cognitive processes and organizational contexts.
She is actively involved in multiple professional organizations including the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE), Association for Public Policy and Management (APPAM), and American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM).
Dr. Canfield's research has received media attention, particularly her work on rural broadband adoption and renewable energy consumer behavior, demonstrating the real-world impact of her interdisciplinary approach to complex systems problems.
