Dr. Cary H. Leung is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Widener University. His research focuses on the neurobiology of social behavior, hormonal regulation of brain functions, and sex differences in brain structure. He employs animal models such as songbirds, fish, and rodents, and recently expanded to non-invasive MRI approaches. He actively mentors undergraduates, many of whom present their work at academic conferences. Dr. Leung holds a PhD in Neuroscience and Animal Behavior (Emory University, 2009) and a BA in Biology and Society from Cornell University (1999).
- Education: PhD, Neuroscience and Animal Behavior (Emory University, 2009); BA, Biology and Society (Cornell University, 1999)
Research Interests: Dr. Leung investigates hormonal influences on social behavior, sex differences in brain structure (via MRI), and molecular mechanisms in avian and rodent models. His lab explores gene therapy applications for neurological disorders and uses techniques such as qPCR, immunocytochemistry, and neuroimaging.
Awards: Recipient of Widener University grants (2015–2016), including Faculty Development, Provost, and Schmutz Student Engagement awards.
- Advising/Grants: Mentored over a dozen undergraduate researchers, many advancing to medical school or industry roles (e.g., Johnson & Johnson, CHOP). Active in professional societies like the Society for Neuroscience and STEM-UP PA.
Labs/Teams: The Leung Lab emphasizes collaborative undergraduate research, with alumni contributing to medical, optometry, and neuroscience fields.
