Carter Matheney Tiernan

Dr. Carter Matheney Tiernan is a Professor of Instruction in Computer Science and Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and serves as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in the College of Engineering. She holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UTA and has over 20 years of experience in engineering education, outreach, and student affairs. Her roles include leading Broadening Participation in Engineering (BPE) initiatives, managing endowed scholarships, and overseeing summer programs like TexPREP and Girlgeneering. She has secured over $7M in grants for outreach and retention efforts.

Research interests focus on engineering education, K-12 STEM engagement, and AI applications. She teaches courses such as ENGR 1101 (Introduction to Engineering for Transfer Students) and CSE 2315 (Discrete Structures). Awards include the 2020 ASEE-GSW Outstanding Teaching Award. Dr. Tiernan advises student organizations like the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and chairs the University Studies Faculty Steering Committee.
