Carsten Wagner is a Full Professor at the University of Zurich's Institute of Physiology, Switzerland, where he has held this position since 2009. His research focuses on renal physiology, phosphate homeostasis, and acid-base balance disorders. He completed his medical studies at the University of Tübingen (1991–1998), earning a 'summa cum laude' dissertation on renal phosphate cotransporters. Postdoctoral training included Yale University (1999–2001) and the University of Zurich (2001–2002). He led an independent research group at the Institute of Physiology (2002–2006) and earned his Habilitation in Physiology from the University of Zurich in 2005.

His research addresses kidney stone pathophysiology, renal transport mechanisms, and inherited/acquired disorders of phosphate balance. He has held prestigious scholarships throughout his career, including from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Academic Scholarship Foundation.
