Carsten Reinhardt

Carsten Reinhardt is Professor for Historical Studies of Science at the Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology, University of Bielefeld, where he has held his chair since 2007. His academic career includes significant positions at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (President and CEO, 2013-2016), Max-Planck-Institute for the History of Science (Research Fellow), and University of Regensburg (Associate and Assistant Professor).

His educational background includes an M.A. in history, history of science, and chemistry from the Technical University of Berlin, followed by a Ph.D. in 1996 with a dissertation on industrial research in chemistry from the same institution. He completed his habilitation at the University of Regensburg in history of science in 2003.

Reinhardt is recognized as a leading historian of chemistry in Europe whose work uniquely combines the history of twentieth-century chemistry with technology history and social-cultural context. His research focuses on four key areas: the history of industrial chemistry research around 1900, the introduction of physical methods into twentieth-century chemistry, regulatory knowledge (science used to control technology's societal impact), and the scope of historical studies of science within knowledge society frameworks.

Reinhardt maintains active leadership roles in the academic community, having been appointed to the ZiF's Board of Directors and as speaker of the advisory council of the Leopoldina center for Science Studies as of October 2019. His research program continues to explore the complex relationships between scientific practice, industrial application, and societal regulation throughout modern chemistry's development.
