Carsten Kühnel

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carsten Kühnel is a Professor of Intelligent Transport Systems at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt, where he has held his position since 2017. He serves as Program Director for the Master's degree programmes in Industrial Engineering for Transport Engineering (M.Eng.) and Traffic and Transportation (M.Sc.). Additionally, he is Head of the Research Institute for Transport and Spatial Planning (IVR), a member of the Research and Transfer Committee, and a member of the Academic Committee.

His research focuses on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) with dual emphases:

• Traffic telematics for dynamic traffic control
• Cooperative vehicle-infrastructure systems enabling connected/automated driving

Core objectives include optimizing traffic efficiency, enhancing safety, and advancing sustainability in transportation networks. His work bridges infrastructure challenges with emerging mobility technologies.

He teaches extensively across bachelor's and master's programs, covering subjects such as Road Traffic Technology, Traffic Telematics, Microscopic Traffic Simulation, and Sustainable Transportation Systems.
