Carrie Preston is a Professor of English and Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at Boston University, holding the Arvind and Chandan Nandlal Kilachand Professorship. She serves as Director of the Kilachand Honors College and leads the Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program. With a BA from Michigan State University and MA/PhD from Rutgers University, her research spans modernist literature, performance studies, feminist/queer theory, and transnational/postcolonial studies.
Her major publications include *Modernism’s Mythic Pose* (Oxford, 2011), winner of the De La Torre Bueno Prize in dance studies, and *Learning to Kneel* (Columbia, 2016), exploring Japanese Noh’s impact on global modernism. Current projects examine race, gender, and audience participation in interactive theater.
- Research supported by grants from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the Peter Paul Career Development Professorship.
- Awards include the 2015 United Methodist Church Scholar-Teacher of the Year Award and the 2012 De La Torre Bueno Prize.
Teaching focuses on modernist drama, feminist theory, and performance. Directs interdisciplinary courses like WS 101 and WS 801, fostering student engagement through performance-based learning.
