Carolyn Plateau is a Reader in Applied Psychology at Loughborough University, where she has held roles including Lecturer (2015), Senior Lecturer (2020), and Reader (2024). She graduated from the University of Oxford with an MA in Experimental Psychology (2009), followed by an MRes (2010) and PhD (2015) in Psychology from Loughborough. Her research focuses on athlete mental health, eating behaviors, and body image, with affiliations to the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. She teaches undergraduate modules on addictive behaviors and eating psychology and oversees postgraduate programs as Associate Director for Postgraduate Taught Studies.
Her work explores sociocultural influences on exercise behaviors, compulsive exercise in adolescents, and mental health interventions for athletes. Recent studies include analyzing pandemic impacts on exercise psychopathology and qualitative research on elite para-athletes' wellbeing. Carolyn actively contributes to sport psychology discourse through publications and collaborations, emphasizing evidence-based practices for athlete support systems.
Key areas of expertise include disordered eating in athletes, the role of social networks in mental health, and the development of self-help interventions for eating disorders. She has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students in these domains and is a vocal advocate for improving mental health resources in sports environments.
