Carolyn Otto is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Mathematics from Rice University and a B.S. from UW-Eau Claire. Her research focuses on low-dimensional topology, knot and link theory (particularly concordance and virtual knots), and innovative teaching strategies for non-STEM students. She has also explored creative writing in mathematics as an educational tool.
Dr. Otto’s publications span top-tier journals like Journal of Topology and its Applications and Algebraic and Geometric Topology, addressing topics such as C-complexes, algebraically slice knots, and Milnor’s invariants. She has also contributed to pedagogical works, including a Springer chapter on engaging non-STEM learners using creative applications like zombies and secret agencies.
- Awards:
- 2020 Mid-Career Mentoring Award (Council on Undergraduate Research)
- 2018 Karlgaard Faculty Excellence Award
- 2020-2021 Sabbatical for Milnor’s Invariants research
Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary storytelling and outreach, as seen in her pandemic narrative The Pandemic Through Our Dogs’ Eyes and her MAA blog on journaling in mathematics education. She actively bridges advanced topology research with accessible, creative teaching methods.
