Carolyn Duncan serves as Assistant Professor in Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology and Affiliated Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at Michigan Technological University, where she also holds the role of Graduate Program Director.
Her research centers on balance recovery mechanisms and fall prevention strategies, investigating environmental (lighting), task (load carrying), and individual factors (aging, disorders) to enhance mobility for occupational, aging, and special populations. Key interests include postural control in vulnerable groups and ergonomics of built environments tailored for special needs.
Analysis of her 2018-2019 publications reveals concentrated expertise in occupational biomechanics, with recurring themes of dynamic environment adaptation, energy expenditure during movement, and dual-task performance under perturbation. Her work bridges human factors engineering and movement science to develop practical workplace safety interventions.
Dr. Duncan directs the MTU Balance and Functional Mobility Lab, leading research on functional movement challenges and evidence-based mobility enhancement solutions for high-risk populations.
