Carolyn Adler is an Associate Professor at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, leading the Department of Molecular Medicine. Her lab investigates molecular mechanisms of organ regeneration using planarian flatworms as a model organism.
- Education:
- PhD, University of California, San Francisco (2005)
- BA, Wesleyan University (1996)
Dr. Adler’s research focuses on how pluripotent stem cells coordinate to regenerate functional organs, particularly the planarian pharynx. Techniques include RNA interference, single-cell transcriptomics, and behavioral analysis. The lab also explores radiation-induced DNA damage and ATM kinase inhibition to prevent stem cell death.
Recent publications highlight 15 articles spanning 2000-2025, covering topics from Robo pathway functions in regeneration to planarian RNAi methods. Collaborations with institutions like the Stowers Institute and University of Utah demonstrate her interdisciplinary approach.
- Scientific Awards:
- Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence (2022)
- NIGMS R01 Grant (2020)
- Cornell Stem Cell Program Fellowship (2018)
- NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein Fellowship (2008-2009)
- NSF Predoctoral Fellowship (1999-2002)
Dr. Adler’s lab has trained PhD students in programs like Genetics, Genomics and Development and Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology. Former postdoc Tisha Bohr and graduate students like Divya Shiroor and Kuang-Tse Wang have advanced to scientific roles at institutions including Loyal for Dogs and Rockefeller University.
