Caroline Nicholson serves as Director of the Centre for Integrated Care & Innovation at Mater Ltd, South Brisbane, and holds adjunct academic positions as Honorary Senior Fellow at Mater Research Institute – UQ and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of General Practice, School of Medicine, at The University of Queensland. With extensive experience in health executive roles, she leads research and policy development programs focused on health system integration and innovative care models at state and national levels.
Her educational background includes:
- MBA
- GAICD (Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors)
- GradDipPhty (UK) - Graduate Diploma in Physiotherapy
- PhD from The University of Queensland (2019) on 'A governance framework for integrated primary/secondary health service delivery in Australia'
Dr. Nicholson's research centers on health system integration, development of innovative care models, integrated governance approaches, policy reform, multidisciplinary team-based care, and e-health. Her work has significant international impact, particularly in frailty management within primary care and eConsult service implementation for specialist access. She emphasizes practical applications that bridge policy and clinical practice through evidence-based frameworks.
Analysis of her recent publications (2023-2025) reveals a strong focus on operationalizing integrated care through frailty screening protocols in general practice and rigorous evaluation of eConsult services. These works demonstrate methodological diversity (costing analyses, feasibility studies, narrative reviews) while consistently addressing system-level barriers to integrated care delivery, with particular attention to aging populations and primary-specialty care coordination.
She currently serves as an investigator in two Centres of Research Excellence (CREs) in Primary Care Reform and has secured substantial research funding for projects including the REMAIN HOME trial. Her policy advocacy includes participation in the 2011 Australian delegation to the 'International thought-leaders in Primary Care' conference in Washington DC and co-organization of Australia's biannual International Primary Health Care Reform Conference.
As Director of the Centre for Integrated Care & Innovation at Mater Ltd, Dr. Nicholson leads multidisciplinary teams developing and implementing innovative care models. Her leadership extends to national health reform initiatives where she applies governance frameworks to improve system integration, particularly through the development of clinical microsystems approaches and policy-relevant research translation.
